Psychology
Why do people lash out at relief workers during emergencies? How can you help someone who no longer feels life is worth living? Do genes play a role in ADHD or addiction?
The Bachelor of Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam focuses on the intersection between health, behavioural patterns, and ways of thinking. How do these differ from one person to the next, and how we can influence them?
Human behaviour in all its forms is endlessly fascinating.

What methods are available for treating post-traumatic stress disorder? How effective is a short-term therapy delivered online? What is the relationship between heredity and bullying? Why do some people—and not others—lead healthy lifestyles? How you develop, what you observe, what decisions you make: everything is behaviour. That behaviour is influenced by where and how we grow up and the predispositions passed on to us by our parents. The interplay between all these factors shapes who we are, what we do, and how we view the world.
Asking questions and listening to the answers—really listening—is second nature to you. You are curious and open-minded. You want to know how things work. In the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology, you take a scientific approach to unravelling the challenges we face as people. The programme is demanding and the lectures call for active participation. You are constantly challenged to get the best out of yourself and to reflect critically on your observations and opinions. In the first two years you acquire a solid foundation of knowledge, and subsequently choose the specialisation that suits you best: Clinical Psychology; Social and Organisational Psychology; Biological and Cognitive Psychology; or Psychopathology, Prevention, and Health. Everything is focused on your future—and as a psychologist, your future is as versatile as it is bright.
The lectures are given by inspiring experts and, in the tutorials, you explore the subject matter in more depth. The English language plays an important role in the programme. This programme is entirely in English, but you can also choose to follow the standard Psychologie programme where part of the curriculum is given in Dutch.

So you’ve graduated as a junior psychologist, now what?
Most Bachelor’s graduates choose to continue their studies, but you can also start working as a junior psychologist at many different companies.
You have a broad understanding of the different fields within psychology and have insight into individual differences and understand how people and groups influence one another. What’s more, you can identify thought and behavioural patterns that have become self-evident to others. During your studies you explored individual and group behaviour in all its facets. Why do people do what they do? And where does that behaviour come from? With the insights you gain, you can help others to broaden their horizons and change their behaviour for the better. Here, you come to understand that you are part of a greater whole, and your presence always influences what does or doesn’t happen.

Psychology is a selective programme (Numerus Fixus). In addition to being selected for a spot in the programme, applicants holding a non-Dutch pre-university diploma must meet a number of requirements. If you do not yet meet the requirements but expect to do so in the future (such as obtaining your diploma), you can already apply.
We will evaluate your application and inform you of our admission decision. All outstanding requirements need to be met in full by the time you enrol for the programme. Admission to the programme will remain conditional until your certified diploma copy is received and the conditions in your admission decision letter have been met.
1. A diploma equivalent to the Dutch pre-university VWO-diploma
See the Diploma Requirement List for examples of accepted diplomas per country.
Please note: this list is meant to give you an indication of admissibility; no rights can be derived from it.
Applicants who do not meet this criterion may be asked to sit (an) entry exam(s) to prove they are eligible for admission.
2. Proof of sufficient proficiency in English
Although complete applications are preferred, you can begin your application before you have completed the test and then submit your passing score once you have been conditionally admitted. You can find all accepted tests and scores on our Language Requirements webpage.
3. Proof of sufficient proficiency in Mathematics
After you apply to the programme and upload the required documents in our student portal, your International Student Advisor will have a look at your transcripts to determine whether your diploma is equivalent to the Dutch VWO diploma and whether your mathematics level is sufficient.
These examples of diplomas demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the required level of mathematics:
