Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

What kind of world do people want to live in? How can societies be organised in a way that's fair? What role do new media play in the political opinions being formed by populations today?

During this intensive, small-scale, selective bachelor's programme, you will benefit from a truly interdisciplinary programme that applies politics, philosophy, and economics directly to public policy issues in practice.

Philosophy, Politics and Economics: Studieninhalte

Part of the John Stuart Mill College, studying PPE at VU Amsterdam means benefiting from a personalised learning experience with lots of interaction between students and teachers. This Bachelor's programme is the first of its kind in mainland Europe.

You will tackle societal issues from multiple perspectives, using multiple disciplines. For example, approaching climate change from a political and an economic perspective, or examining issues that monopolies create through an economic lens and an ethical lens. Teaching is done mostly through seminars: in small groups, you will debate the big questions, look at how policies are applied, and critically discuss the outcomes.

The college has its own floor within VU Amsterdam's main building. This allows students to experience the vibrant VU campus life while taking advantage of the college’s private spaces available to PPE students only. The college provides spaces for social activities (mostly organized by PPE’s  own study association KallioPPE ) and extracurricular events organized by coordinators, (PhD) students.

The programme is truly international in its orientation: 50% of the students who follow PPE come from abroad, and all students have a very international outlook on life. That's important, given that almost all PPE students take one semester at a partner university abroad - whether in the US, Europe, Asia or South Africa.

Students are required to choose two disciplines/tracks from their second year onwards. However, for highly talented students it's also possible to participate in the Honours programme (30 ECTS). There are two options: the internal honours programme, which means taking all three PPE disciplines; or the external honours programme, which means taking courses from another faculty or even another university in Amsterdam.

Philosophy, Politics and Economics: Karriere

The majority of PPE graduates continue to do a Master’s programme in one of the three disciplines (philosophy, politics or economics) or in a related subject like global ethics, environmental policy or development studies.

PPE graduates make excellent opinion leaders and decision makers due to the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills they've acquired, as well as the multi-disciplinary nature of the programme itself. Whatever you choose to do, you are sure to be highly employable.

Philosophy, Politics and Economics: Zulassung

Admission requirements: non-Dutch previous education

In addition to a strong motivation, your educational qualifications are assessed as part of the selection procedure. In order to be admissible you must meet our academic requirements as specified below.
Academic requirements

Applicants holding a non-Dutch pre-university diploma apply via the International Office. We will evaluate your application and and inform you of the admission decision from the Admission Board. If you do not yet meet the requirements but expect to do so in the future (such as obtaining your diploma), you can already apply and - if selected -  receive a conditional admission.

Requirements that apply:

1. A diploma equivalent to the Dutch pre-university vwo-diploma

See "Examples of accepted international diplomas" for a list of diplomas accepted as equivalent to the vwo-diploma level.
Please note: this list is meant to give you an indication of admissibility; no rights can be derived from it.

2. A sufficient GPA

We are looking for a Grade Point Average on your secondary school diploma that is equivalent to ≥ 7.0 in the Dutch grading system. If you have not graduated yet you can receive a conditional offer; we then calculate your GPA over the final two years of your secondary education at the moment of applying. In its assessment, the Admission Board will put special focus on grades obtained for relevant courses such as economics, mathematics, philosophy and politics. In order to receive an unconditional offer you will need to graduate with the required GPA.  For examples of accepted GPA's you can check our PPE diploma list.

3. Proof of sufficient proficiency in English

You can already begin your application before you have completed the test and then submit your passing score once you have been conditionally admitted. You can find all accepted tests and scores below.

All courses in the PPE programme are conducted in English and, since the student community is highly international, most conversation and socialising occurs in English as well. Consequently, we require an English language test for all applications, with the exception of those who completed their education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia. Students who obtained either an International Baccalaureate Diploma or European Baccalaureate in English-taught programmes are also exempted.

All other prospective students must provide test scores to prove English proficiency.
We accept the following tests and minimum scores:

  • IELTS (academic): 7.0 with at least 6.5 for each of the four components
  • TOEFL iBT: 100 with minimum scores of 22 for each component
    • Note: for 2020-2021 we will also be accepting the TOEFL iBT special home edition: 100.
  • VU TOEFL ITP: 600 (only the TOEFL ITP test from VU Amsterdam is accepted*)
  • Cambridge English Qualifications C1 Advanced (CAE): grade A or B
  • Cambridge English Qualifications C2 Proficiency (CPE): grade C or higher

4. Proof of sufficient proficiency in Mathematics

After you apply for the programme and upload the required documents in our VUnet Student Portal, the International Student Advisor will evaluate your qualifications to determine whether your mathematics level is sufficient.

The courses in our programme use a significant amount of mathematics and even though we provide mathematics training in the methods courses, this training moves at a fast pace. In our experience we have found that a minimum level of prior mathematics proficiency is required. The International Office will determine whether your mathematics level is sufficient.

These examples of diplomas demonstrate sufficient proficiency in mathematics:

  • International Baccalaureate: Mathematics SL or HL, Applications & Interpretation HL, Analysis & Approaches SL or HL.
  • UK British GCE A-Level: A-level in Mathematics completed with a grade A, B or C.
  • Germany: Zeugnis der allgemeinen Hochschulreife including Mathematics Grundkurs or Leistungskurs as Prüfungsfach.

Admission requirements: Dutch previous education

If you have obtained or will obtain a Dutch diploma such as the vwo-diploma, please check the criteria on our Dutch webpage.
