Artificial Intelligence at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Can we build robots that help prevent loneliness among elderly people? How can banks stop transaction fraud? How can we improve self-driving cars? How does Netflix know which movies to suggest we watch next?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has so many potential applications – in healthcare, banking, transport, entertainment and more. In this programme, you’ll learn not only about the technology behind AI, but also about its application in society.

Artificial Intelligence: Studieninhalte

VU Amsterdam’s Artificial Intelligence programme is unique in that we offer two separate tracks that specialise in the two different sides of Artificial Intelligence. Whether you choose the Intelligent Systems track or the Socially Aware Computing track, you’ll get a thorough understanding of how AI applies in our world. So that means not just delving into the code that powers machine learning, but also looking at the psychology behind the ways we use AI and the social impact of technological solutions.

VU Amsterdam’s research specialises in “Humane AI” or “Hybrid AI”: the premise being that the combination of human and machine intelligence is greater than the sum of its part. You’ll start with the social context in which a technological system needs to function, and then develops algorithms that work within that context. This is a truly interdisciplinary programme: information science meets social science.

Artificial Intelligence: Karriere

Almost all organisations benefit from intelligent use of computers – the world is your oyster. Graduates from the Artificial Intelligence programme have no problem finding a job, which means that some students are now choosing to take a year off after their Bachelor’s to travel or work abroad, before either starting their Master’s or embarking on their careers.

Artificial Intelligent graduates form a crucial bridge between technology and society – you might not be the programmer doing the coding yourself, but you’ll have the skills to analyse the problem, understand the need from a human perspective, and translate those into a project plan for a developer to execute. You could find yourself working on developing a care robot, an app to help people with depression, or e-learning programs to improve education.

Artificial Intelligence: Zulassung

If you have obtained or will obtain a Dutch diploma, please check the criteria on our Dutch webpage.

Applicants holding a non-Dutch pre-university diploma must meet a number of requirements. If you do not yet meet the requirements but expect to do so in the future (such as obtaining your diploma), you can already apply. We will evaluate your application and inform you of our admission decision. All outstanding requirements need to be met in full by the time you enrol for the programme. Admission to the programme will remain conditional until your certified diploma copy is received and the conditions in your admission decision letter have been met.

Requirements that apply:

1. A diploma equivalent to the Dutch pre-university VWO-diploma

See the Diploma Requirement List for examples of accepted diplomas per country.
Please note: this list is meant to give you an indication of admissibility; no rights can be derived from it.

2. Proof of sufficient proficiency in English

Although complete applications are preferred, you can begin your application before you have completed the test and then submit your passing score once you have been conditionally admitted. You can find all accepted tests and scores on our Language Requirements webpage.

3. Proof of sufficient proficiency in Mathematics

After you apply to the programme and upload the required documents in our student portal, your International Student Advisor will have a look at your transcripts to determine whether your diploma is equivalent to the Dutch VWO-diploma and whether your Mathematics level is sufficient. These examples of diplomas demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the subject Mathematics:

  • International Baccalaureate: Mathematics SL/HL, Applications & Interpretation HL, Analysis & Approaches SL/HL
  • British GCE A-Levels: A-level in Mathematics. At least grade A, B or C
  • Germany: Zeugnis der allgemeinen Hochschulreife, including Mathematics Grundkurs as Prüfungsfach or Mathematics erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau (eA)/Leistungsfach .
  • European Baccalaureate:  Mathematics; written or oral examination, at least 3 hours during the Orientation Cycle.

If your proficiency in this subject is considered to be insufficient, your International Student Advisor will inform you about the possibilities how to meet the requirements with additional certificates.

When advised to sit an entry exam, the following certificates are deemed equivalent to Dutch VWO Mathematics A:

Mathematics Exams (available in English and accepted by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam):

  • Boswell-Bèta (English). Boswell-Bèta in Utrecht (the Netherlands) provides a mathematics course in English with exams in December, May and July.
  • CCVX (Dutch and English). CCVX offers mathematics exams equivalent to the Dutch VWO mathematics A level for Dutch-speaking and English-speaking applicants.
  • Online Mathematics Placement Test. The Online Mathematics Placement Test-A (OMPT-A ) offered by SOWISO is an online mathematics test that you can take from home by means of online proctoring.

A positive result for the mathematics examination (5,5/10 in the mathematics A exam or 70% in the OMPT-A online exam) is compulsory for admission to the programme.
